"Nacho Patrol's FUTURISTIC ABABA LP released on Menelik records (Addis Ababa, 1978/1979).

Ultra super-rare Ehtiopian jazzfunk LP with Raw vocoders, dirty vox organs, strutting wahwah guitars and hypnotic rhythms. Mnumbi Massaka was apparently the man behind Nacho Patrol. Due to the dictatorship that came to power in the late 70s he was forced to move to italy where he continued to work in the music business and did the soundtrack for the movie Maze of Violence. Just before moving he produced the album FUTURISTIC ABABA in 1978. It didn't take long before the dictatorship forbid this kind of music to be played or sold in music shops."

But well, its actually Legowelt. Pretty Amazing.

Almost 3 years ago a friend of mine gave me a CD with four mixes/compilations by Julian House, the graphic designer of the band Broadcast. I listened to them over and over and over since they are perfect working music. There was one song on it that really stood out for me and always was the climax of the compilation. It was a kind of Black Sabbath/Led Zeppelin kind of feel but then in Japanese... This description got me a lot of weird looks by grumpy grey haired record store owners on my search for this song throughout the four corners of the world.

Fast forward in time, about a month ago my friend finally decides to tell me the playlists are on Broadcast's website... Ok...

So this song is by Kuni Kawachi and Flower Travelling Band and is called Kirikyogen.

The album which has the same title was produced in 1970 before the second album of FTB but because for some reason the producer Yuya Uchida wasn't satisfied with the results it wasn't released untill after FTB broke up.

This great song was also featured in 2001 on the compilation Love Peace & Poetry 4: Japanese Psychedelic Music.

Henry/Colombier - Psyché Rock

This song was originally released in 1964 as a 7" single Too Fortiche/Psyché Rock by Les Yper Sound which was a pseudonym of composers Pierre henry and Michel Colombier.

It became a huge succes and sold over 150.000 copies. In 1967 it was released as part of a piece called 'Messe Pour Le Temps Present' written for a ballet by Henry and Colombier. The year 2000 saw the release of the Psyché Rock Sessions a remix project with contributions of amongst others Fatboy Slim and William Orbit.

You gotta love Sparks. This is my favorite song of the Moroder produced album "No. 1 in heaven". I put the long version up which really gives the song that extra boost. Great song, great mustache, pretty cool video too.

Mort Garson - Ode To An African Violet

I really like Mort Garson, his weird Moog driven songs are like little stories. He has done many great projects including writing all the songs for the cult psychedelic record "Cosmic Sounds" by The Zodiac. He also did some film scores and composed the National geographic Theme. This album "Plantasia" is music for plants. Silly as it seems studies have indicated plants do respond to sound. There was a major experiment done in 1973 by Dorothy Retallack who discovered that plants leaned towards relaxing music, while they leaned away from rock music. And that was a pretty good time for rock music.. Plants must really HATE Creed.

This track appears on the 60s psychedelic compilation, Beyond the Calico Wall released in 1990 by Voxx Records. Beyond the Calico Wall is a great collection of weird 60s psychedelic songs. This track however, Resurrection, dates back to 1988 and was recorded by Demons of Negativity, the band of Erik Lindgren who compiled and produced the compilation.

Johan Timman - Trip Into The Body

Dutch Moog wizard Johan Timman played in several prog rock groups like Think Tank and Innerminit. But in 1981 he released an amazing concept album called "Trip Into The Body". He hasn't released anything since, but apparently he is working on a follow-up due in 2008. I really love the opening track which is both sinister and goofy.
